When Winnie the Pooh first came out people must have thought the name sounded funny.

Winnie the Pooh. Sounds like poo.

Gotta joke for ya.
Why did Tigger stick his head in the toilet?

He was looking for Pooh.

Be careful what you post!
You might just start...World War Three!

Mr. She Shun Ping, head of China, is already upset about being compared to W the P.
And thats without that "other" meaning of "poo" being spelled out to him.

I doubt that he knows colloquial English well enough to know about that yet.

So...shhhhh....

When it first came out, "pooh" had a different meaning.

"Winnie", however, was a girl's name.

Not sure how you even get "Winnie-the-Pooh" out of "Edward Bear", though...

From Winnie The Pooh Chapter 1:

Quote:
When I first heard his name, I said, just as you are going to say, "But I thought he was a boy?"
"So did I," said Christopher Robin.

"Then you can't call him Winnie?"

"I don't."

"But you said——"

"He's Winnie-ther-Pooh. Don't you know what 'ther' means?"

"Ah, yes, now I do," I said quickly; and I hope you do too, because it is all the explanation you are going to get.

Winnie is derived from Winnipeg.

Winnie was a real Canadian black bear whom a soldier named after his home town Winnipeg, and real Christopher Robin often visited Winnie after she was donated to the London Zoo in the UK. And if Christopher Robin thought Winnie was a boy, and who were they to argue with him? The "Pooh" part apparently came from a swan with that name.

Although at the end of the first chapter of the book, it says that after hanging onto a balloon to reach the bees' honey in a tree, Winnie's arms were so stiff they stayed up straight for a week, and whenever a fly landed on his nose, he had to blow it off., and the author thinks, but is unsure, that that is why Winnie is always called Pooh.

Yup. I just started reading it to my son the other day, and...whew...it is quite something else.

Quite something else. And also, quite something else, as it were. Or, sometimes, it is not quite something else. But who can say, if it is something else, or not something else?

Oh bother.
