The entire time I was growing up, all I ever wanted was to be a writer. Specifically, a reporter for the New York Times. I really tried to make it happen too ... during my college years, I worked closely on one of the country's best college newspapers with two people who eventually made it big (one for ESPN, the other for NPR). I wound up crashing and burning hard though and life took me in a different direction. Ironically, my brother is now a research specialist for the New York Times and has been involved with a couple of Pulitzer's.

I didn't know.

I was raised by hard-core career academics and was merely certain that i didn't want to do that.

I flunked out of programming classes in highschool attempting to see if i could be a programmer like my oldest brother.

If i'd been raised by steel workers I'd be the sharpest mechanic at some automotive shop, and perhaps happier than i am now. But i was raised by people with advanced degrees in the humanities and it didn't occur to me until too late that maybe it's ok to just learn a trade and do the work.

At any rate, I don't recall having a specific aspiration. I mean, sure, i wished i could make money as an artist or something, but i was too cynical to go through with that.

I have a friend who followed that career track. He works for ebay, in customer service, and he's just lucky he married money. I'm sure he had a great time in college, though. I didn't go to college.

As it turns out, I break software for a living. my name tags say "Sr. Software QA Engineer" these days. It's boring, but i'm reasonably good at it and i can stop thinking about it when i get home at the end of the day.

When I was a young child I wanted to be a veterinarian because my favorite show was Emergency Vets. At one point I also wanted to be a zoo keeper.

When I was 5 I wanted to be a dog sled racer (or "musher") because my special interest was the movie Balto.

At age 11 and again at age 16 I thought about joining a convent and becoming a nun, but I didn't go through with it because 1) you have to give up all your earthly possessions, so I couldn't indulge in my special interests and 2) I wouldn't get to be with my family members anymore. (The "no sex ever" rule wouldn't bother me because I don't even want to have sex in the first place.)

At age 12 all the way to adulthood I dreamed of becoming a famous manga artist. There is still a small part of me that would love to fulfill that dream, but I know that it isn't ever going to happen.

This sounds horrible I admit, but due to my interest in firearms I wanted to be a professional contract killer.

Its a career choice I have not decided to follow though

A hobbit ;-)

Then an artist, but I'm not great at that, though maybe I'm getting there, more like a farmer now, more like a hobbit, but it doesn't pay well and looks like I'm gonna have to figure something else out again.

Oh yeah, about 15 years ago I tried going back to college for geography cause I always liked maps and that's visual graphic too but they wouldn't take me in the program.

From the age of about 5 to 15 I wanted to be a marine biologist. Or a vet.

When I realised I wasn't a very good swimmer, and terrible at chemistry, I changed to wanting to be an anthropologist.

In the end I studied Religion, which hasn't been overly useful.

I am now doing an online Science degree (OU), and trying to improve on my chemistry. I think I'll still remain a hermit though.

safe and warm and fed and watered. i was all of those so i have no complaint about my childhood.

the rest was up to me. i am glad i was given the responsibility to be who i am.

even though i do not fit with the general world, i am the boss of me and i give myself many allowances.
i sleep very satisfactorily. i am going to do that now.

I desperately wanted to be airhostess so that i could fly away from all the pain inside my house
the beatings, starvings, abuse
I wanted to travel the world, meet new people, serve them, make friends and contacts
I wanted a good life and freedom but never got selected as a Airhostess due to my AS
its just loneliness, joblessness, isolation and seclusion in my life.

I wanted to play the tambourine for Fleetwood Mac. That was all I wanted until the third grade.

Since then, the only thing I've ever been able to keep interested in long enough to make a career out of it is writing.

An entomologist. I used to walk around with the latest insect books and tell random people all kinds of facts. One day, I told my teacher a couple of facts and she asked me "Have you considered being an Entomologist?" I asked her what that was and she wrote the word down and told me to go look it up. For years after that, I told everyone that's what I wanted.
